Quick answer: A Magento to Shopify migration from a UK agency typically costs £15,000–£60,000 and takes 3–6 months. The UK market average for a mid-size catalogue is around £18,500. Agora Studio does it for a fixed £4,999 in 2–3 weeks, and you see the finished store before you pay. The difference comes down to automation and productised scope — explained below.
What UK agencies actually charge
We have reviewed dozens of migration quotes from UK Shopify agencies over the last two years. The numbers cluster like this:
| Agency type | Typical quote | Timeline | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | £3,000–£8,000 | 4–8 weeks | Data migration, theme setup. Often no redirects, limited testing. |
| Small agency (2–10 people) | £12,000–£25,000 | 2–4 months | Full migration, custom theme, redirects, some integrations. |
| Mid-size agency | £25,000–£60,000 | 3–6 months | Discovery phase, UX design, custom build, QA, training. |
| Shopify Plus partner | £60,000–£150,000+ | 4–9 months | Enterprise scope, multiple stakeholders, change management. |
The £18,500 average comes from the small-to-mid agency bracket, which is where most UK Magento merchants with 500–5,000 SKUs end up.
What drives the cost
Catalogue size and complexity. 200 simple products is a different job from 5,000 configurable products with custom attributes, tiered pricing, and bundle logic. Magento's data model is flexible in ways that do not map cleanly to Shopify, and untangling that is where the hours go.
Custom functionality. Every Magento extension and custom module needs a decision: replicate it on Shopify with an app, rebuild it custom, or drop it. Agencies charge per decision, and per build.
Integrations. ERP, warehouse management, accounting, PIM, marketplaces, email. Each one is scoped and rebuilt. A store with Sage, a 3PL, and Amazon integration adds £5,000–£15,000 to most quotes.
Redirects. Mapping every old Magento URL to its new Shopify equivalent so you do not lose search rankings. This is tedious, high-stakes work that some agencies skip — and merchants only discover the omission when traffic drops 40% post-launch.
Design. A custom theme from scratch is £8,000–£30,000 on its own. A customised premium theme is £2,000–£8,000.
Discovery and project management. Larger agencies bill 20–40% of the project on workshops, documentation, and account management. That overhead is real, but it does not migrate a single product.
Why we can do it for £4,999
Three reasons, and none of them involve cutting corners on the things that matter.
Automated data pipeline. We built our own tooling for extracting, transforming, and loading Magento catalogues into Shopify. What takes an agency developer 40–80 hours of manual CSV wrangling runs through our pipeline in a few hours. Our largest single migration moved 6,400 products this way.
Productised scope. We do not run a discovery phase, we do not hold workshops, and we do not bill for account management. You give us your store URL, we build it, you review it. The scope is fixed so the price can be.
No sales risk. Because you see the finished store before paying anything, we do not need to price in the cost of quotes that go nowhere. That overhead is baked into every agency quote you receive — ours is not.
What is included in £4,999
Full product catalogue migration including variants, images, and custom attributes. Customer accounts and order history. Categories mapped to Shopify collections. 301 redirect map for every product, category, and CMS page URL. A custom Shopify theme built to your brand — not a template with your logo dropped in. Shopify Payments, shipping zones, and tax configuration. Domain transfer and DNS. Go-live with zero downtime. Two weeks of post-launch support.
What is not included
Honesty is the point of this page, so here is what sits outside the fixed price:
Third-party app subscriptions. If you need Klaviyo, a subscription app, or a loyalty programme, those are your monthly costs, not ours. We will recommend and install them.
Custom app development. If your Magento store has bespoke functionality that no Shopify app replicates, building a custom app is quoted separately. Most stores do not need this — we will tell you if yours does.
Complex ERP or WMS integration. Connecting Shopify to Sage, Netsuite, a 3PL, or a warehouse system is scoped as a separate project. Simple integrations via existing Shopify apps are included.
Content writing. We migrate your existing product descriptions and pages. We do not rewrite them — though our AI content pipeline can, as a separate service.
Shopify's own fees. Your Shopify plan (£25–£344/month, or Shopify Plus) is paid to Shopify directly.
Catalogues above 10,000 products or unusually complex data. These are quoted individually. Still fixed-price, still see-before-you-pay — just a different number.
Magento 1 vs Magento 2 migration cost
Magento 1 has been end-of-life since June 2020. If you are still on it, the migration is more urgent but not more expensive — our pipeline handles both versions. Magento 2 stores tend to have more integrations and more custom code, which affects the "not included" list above more than the base price.
Hidden costs of staying on Magento
The migration cost only makes sense against the cost of not migrating. A typical UK Magento store spends £1,500–£5,000 a month on hosting, agency retainer, security patching, and extension licences. That is £18,000–£60,000 a year — every year. On Shopify, the equivalent infrastructure cost is £300–£4,000 a year depending on plan. Most merchants recover the £4,999 within 3–6 months.
